House in Arbanasi
This house is placed in Arbanasi, known for the rich history and large number of historical monuments, such as 17th- and 18th-century churches and examples of Bulgarian National Revival architecture. With a tsar decree from 1921 the settlement is declared resort, and in 2000 it is declared “historical settlement” with national significance and Architectural complex with national significance. So the design needs to follow very strictly the historical architecture.
The clients – a very modern couple with three kids – wanted a big but cozy home following the historical tradition, but as contemporary as possible. The design strategy was to create modern spaces within the volumes in the norms of Architectural complex. We had to restore a stone arc from 14th century and use a lot of common materials as stone and wood. The result is a spacious home with big areas, four bedrooms, guest room, space for cinema and eight meters high open space in the center of the house. The building process is going on!
